Holidays are supposed to be stress-free and relaxing, but it also means a lot of decisions about what to do, where to eat and when to head out or relax. Here’s a meditation to help you enjoy the holidays a bit more and to live with less stress when you’re away from home.

Sit with your back straight and the top of your head facing up to the sky or ceiling. Close your eyes. Repeat this phrase to yourself, at whatever pace feels right to you: 

“I’m grateful to be here. I’m grateful to be here. I’m grateful to be here.”

Then move your gratitude to yourself and try to do this with a slight smile on your face:

“I’m grateful for me. I’m grateful for me. I’m grateful for me.”

Finally, to bring good cheer to your entire day, whether boats or planes or ubers are running late, repeat to yourself, again silently and in your mind’s eye:

“I love my life. I love my life. I love my life.”

Meditation isn’t about changing what happens to you during the day, which is often not possible, but about changing your reaction to what happens and giving you more flexibility about how you respond to events throughout the day. And so, if you get bad news during a trip, practice saying to yourself, even in that moment:

“I’m grateful for this moment.”

It doesn’t mean you’re glad to be running late and potentially missing a flight or whatever is happening in this moment it simply means you’re grateful for the flexibility and freedom meditation gives you to choose your response to every situation you’re faced with throughout the day.

So maybe, when the Uber driver finally shows up, you can choose to smile at him, say a warm hello, and hope you arrive on time. Maybe if you miss a ferry you weren’t meant to get to that destination today. Be open to what is rather than what you want at a given moment. This is the power and freedom meditation gives us.
