There’s no magic spell to take away holiday stress—but mantra meditation comes pretty close. “A mantra is a word or phrase that you silently repeat to yourself during meditation,” says The Chopra Center. “The purpose of the mantra is to give you something to put your attention on other than your thoughts.” Get started by sitting up straight and taking about five slow, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth before gently shutting your eyes and returning your breath to a normal pace. From there, silently repeat the mantra that works best for you for about 10 minutes. Try one of these five to start:

I am enough.

Use when: you receive a snide comment from that friend or family member with a knack for tearing down your self-esteem.

I am exactly where I should be right now.

Use when: obligations have you torn in every direction, giving you a case of holiday FOMO.

I am free to love.

Use when: bad memories from holidays’ past come bubbling to the surface, keeping you from sharing the joy of the season.

I can only control myself.

Use when: people around you let stress turn them into Grinches.

I give myself permission to say no.

Use when: RSVPing to that mountain of party invites—you’ll probably have more fun relaxing at a few holiday parties instead of rushing around.
